*Warning! Spoilers!*

IN THE DEBUT NOVEL OF GL THOMAS, otherwise known as the mighty Twinjas, space adventure and time travel collides on the Earth-like “Geo,” a modern-day high school setting where people are classified by Types. However, a ruthless Naga has come to Geo with the intent to eradicate the last of the Nobans…an unsuspecting boy named Sterling Wayfairer.

Sterling is a likeable high school boy. His world isn’t very big outside of attending classes, parties, and athletic events, but he always means well. However, little does he know that the nightmares he is plagued with are actually suppressed memories of a world far different from Geo. His time traveling partner, a kick-ass Noban girl named Tetra, arrives to open up his world and enlist his help to track down a dangerous space-traveling serpent known as the Naga, whose single-handed intention is to annihilate entire races.

Tetra is a true gem, and the story really came to life with her viewpoint. She is blunt, thoughtful, and loyal to her friends. Particularly entertaining was the part where she straight up tells Kip how bad his kissing is, which was very refreshing outside of the typical YA fiction where kisses with boys is always fireworks and rainbows. From my recollection, high school had some pretty awkward kisses and dating sequences, and I was very glad that The Mark of Noba fully embraces all of high school’s growing pains to make it more realistic.

Tetra’s viewpoint as an alien to Geo also makes for some interesting social commentary in terms of gender identification and how Puritan societies view sex. For example, Tetra calls into question the usage of “slut” for someone who is promiscuous, and what that means about how their society views sex as a whole. The bond between Tetra and Sterling was very precious, and I appreciated that there was no insta-love here but a fully developed relationship.

The writing flows and makes a for a quick pace. The only distracting part was why names of places were italicized, such as “Geo,” “Seaside,” “Megalopolis,” ect. I typically don’t enjoy books where the plot is largely centered around high school, but in the case of The Mark of Noba, the mystery of the Naga, Noba, and what that promised made me excited to read more. I have a feeling we have only seen the tip of the iceberg in relation to what the next book, City of Falling Stars, has in store!

The Mark of Noba The Sterling Wayfairer Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) GL Tomas Robert Kazmierczak Rebellious Valkyrie Press Books Reviews

I finally found a moment to write my review of this book—one I read months ago, shortly after it first came out in paperback.

First sentence from my notes Now that’s what I call one hell of a senior year! But hey, that’s what Sterling Wayfairer was going for. Determined his senior year of high school to be something stellar, Sterling is unwittingly about to become the poster child for “Be careful what you wish for!”

Sterling is likeable from the start and I came to appreciate him even more as he navigates the challenges that arise on multiple levels when a strong and completely unique young woman materializes in his world. It’s not easy to create a teenage male character who can be physically outmatched by his “match” yet not seem weak. Having a main male character who needs the occasional rescue is a good thing.

Ah, Tetraphrimaporticheeq (okay, so that’s a mouthful) but glorious bringer the dramatic conflict, Tetra, is one of the most unique characters to hit the YA market in some time. I know that a few reviewers had a hard time warming-up to and embracing her. I think that’s because we’re so engrained to expect our female protagonists (or co-protagonists) to be sweet, emotional creatures looking for love and needing to be rescued. Blech. Anybody remember Seven of Nine from Star Trek, Voyager? That is who Tetra reminded me of physically strong, not entirely devoid of emotion (but close) and certainly not ruled by it. Oh, and did I mention beautiful?

I’ve always loved a good Spock-like character who looks at us humans with a healthy removed perspective and struggles to understand why we make such a mess of things with our damn emotions. Tetra is the latest incarnation of that.

I don’t want to give too much away but I so appreciate that Sterling and Tetra are not a “couple” per say and the tension is allowed to build. I also enjoyed and appreciated Sterling’s eclectic mash-up of pals—my personal favorite being Grey Singh. Sadly, you still won’t find many characters like Grey in YA novels today though there are lots of young adults just like him in America.

The world of Geo is not so dramatically different from our own that I needed to consult a guide as to what was what, something that would have pulled me out of the story. I found the “typing” of skin color to be an interesting choice when describing physical characteristics rather than the standard form of “racial” typing in novels where more often than not, everyone but white people is described by their race.

The one thing I did struggle with but later came to understand was Sterling’s mom’s mental illness. The authors deliberately made an interesting character/plot choice here that’s ultimately revealed. But up until that time, I was concerned that her issues were inconsistent and somewhat glossed over.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed Mark of Noba. And yes, I will happily read the next installment, not only because I’m now attached to Sterling and Tetra, but also because I want to see where they go from here; in both their relationship and their next “world” travel.
